At Oakleigh Cases, we keep measurements clear and consistent, but we also understand that terminology can sometimes cause confusion. This is mainly due to the way different cases are used and accessed.
All flight cases are based on three core dimensions:
Length, Width and Height (L × W × H)
- Length (L) – typically the longest side of the case
- Width (W) – the shorter side across the case
- Height (H) – the vertical dimension from base to top
Length vs Depth – What’s the Difference?
In many cases, particularly those accessed from the front (such as rack-mounted or upright cases), you may hear the term Depth (D) instead of Length.
This does not mean the case is measured differently. Depth is simply another name for Length, used when the case has a defined front and is accessed from that direction. The dimension itself remains the same — only the reference point changes.
In the examples shown below:
- Cases positioned horizontally and opened from the top are labelled using Length (L)
- Cases designed to be accessed from the front are labelled using Depth (D)
- Width (W) and Height (H) remain consistent across all case types
This reflects how the case will be used in practice, rather than changing the actual size.

Internal and External Dimensions
When designing a flight case, the most important measurement is always the internal size.
- Internal dimensions refer to the space required to accommodate your equipment.
- External dimensions represent the overall size of the finished case, including panels, aluminium extrusions, ball corners, and other fittings.
At Oakleigh Cases, we always work from your equipment dimensions to ensure a precise and secure fit.
Why Accurate Measurement Matters
Correct measurements ensure:
- Your equipment is properly protected
- The contents remain secure during transport
- The case is practical to handle and use
- The final build is fit for purpose
If you are unsure whether your case should be measured using Length or Depth, simply let us know how the case will be used and our team will guide you and ensure all dimensions are correctly applied.
